Recent Launch Review Transcript

If you’ve been following along with this vlog for awhile, you know that a few months ago we took things up a notch.  Even though I’ve launched a business before and did many of the things the same exact way, I shortcut the process by following a 90-Day pre-launch blueprint taught by Amy Porterfield. Then, I followed that 90-day pre-launch with a 10-Day launch of a new course we developed.

In full transparency, we made $0 from the entire process but I’m not counting it as a failure.  Here’s why:

Reason #1: We more than tripled our email list size.

This isn’t about list size for list size sake.  It’s about having triple the number of people to continue to equip, encourage, and inspire with our weekly content.  I’d even say that some of the new people on our list have already become true friends.  That makes me really excited as we move forward.

What can you take away from this?  As I shared in a recent webinar, building your email list is a great way to build wealth that lasts.  I’m not just talking about monetary wealth.  I’m first and foremost talking about relational wealth.  As you build your email for your business, remember that you’re building relationships that can last long after your launch is done.

Reason #2: We have an awesome Facebook group

Part of Amy’s 90-day pre-launch blueprint involved launching a Facebook group.  This isn’t something that existed when we launched our social enterprise coffee house in 2011 so it’s something I might have left off.  Now, I listed this as reason #2 instead of #1 because I know that email lists are WAY more important than Facebook groups. Yet, I’m still really glad we created it as part of our pre-launch plan because (a) not everyone likes email or responds well there and (b) the people in the Facebook group get to know one another as well.  With email is 1-to-1 communication back and forth but within the group, people are connecting and helping one another in ways that email never could.  It’s pretty spectacular.

What can you take away from this? Be willing to try things that experts suggest.  If I had kept to my launch of the coffee shop from over 6 years ago, I would have missed out on this opportunity.  But, because I was willing to take what I’d already done once and improve it based on Amy’s blueprint, I created this group not really knowing the full extent of why it was important.  Sometimes you will hear an expert telling you how to do something without knowing exactly why.  Still try it and see what happens.

Reason #3: I created an awesome program that I know has helped people already.

During the final days of our pre-launch, we created a 21-day challenge that we called Business Activist Bootcamp.   Well over 100 people signed up.  While not all of them participated (it’s hard to value something that’s free since you have no investment in it but that’s a different point), the ones who did participate experienced some great results for their activist businesses. We are developing some great testimonials and already starting a waitlist for the next round.

What can you take away from this? You know those experts who tell you that you need to work for free when you’re first starting out?  Well, they are right.  While I’m not going to do 1-on-1 coaching for free since it’s waste of both of our time, this bootcamp turned out to be the perfect thing to do for free to start.  I learned a lot about creating an online learning program.  The people who took it seriously got a lot of benefit.  The people who didn’t take it seriously didn’t waste my time as much as if I were investing hours and hours of personal coaching.  So, when you’re thinking about working for free when you’re first starting out, bring some extra creativity to it so that you benefit, your future clients benefit, and you don’t waste your time in the process.

Reason #4: We learned a TON.

As we’ve done a post-mortem of the launch and are exploring what comes next, I realize I am in so much of a better place in terms of what I know about who our ideal customers are and how to talk with them.  I have so many ideas for how to improve by vlog content, my paid programs, the words I use on our website, and so on and so forth.  I wish I could just snap my fingers and all the ideas would magically happen.  Where’s Mary Poppins when I need her?  Until she shows up with a spoonful of sugar, you’ll see me implementing these things as we move forward.

What can you take away from this?  Keep your emphasis on learning and you’ll always succeed because you’ll always grow in some way, shape, or form.  I don’t know but that might sound a little cliche but I know it to be 100% true.  Another entrepreneur I know who started her business a little before mine started is still running her business but also went back to graduate school.  She told me recently that she would never have gotten into the school and the program she is in now if she wouldn’t have started her business.  That’s pretty big and should remind us that when we learn and grow, we’re preparing to be better entrepreneurs and better at whatever other opportunities come our way.

Reason #5: We took action.

So many people never even try.  We didn’t fail because one way to fail is to never try.  Michael Jordan agrees.  He’s quoted as saying, “I can accept failure, everyone fails at something. But I can’t accept not trying.” I completely agree.  I can accept not making any money for now.  What I can’t accept is not trying something new and seeing what happens.

What can you take away from this? Take action.  You have to do the work.  You won’t always be rewarded monetarily right away but keep at it an you will be.  If you never take action though, you’ll never know what could have been.

Reason #6: It’s only a failure if you give up.

We’re not giving up.  In fact, what’s coming next is going to be so much better because we did this launch.

What can you take away from this? Never give up.  There are only 2 ways to fail: never start and quit.  Sure, you can make a complete 180.  Sure, you can take some time off to adjust and recover.  Sure, you can go get a bridge job to make some real money while you figure things out.  Just don’t ever, ever, ever give up.  You owe it to yourself and the world to keep doing what you can to make this world a better place through entrepreneurship.

Stay tuned for awesome things coming to this vlog and our business soon!
